The Techstars Startup Weekend is the perfect entrepreneurship crash-course. Over a single weekend you get to team up with fellow entrepreneurs and start a business under the guidance of amazing mentors.
At the end of the program you have to pitch your business idea to a panel of judges who are real investors, just like Shark Tank! Participants and winners get all sorts of goodies to help them kickstart their business such as serious Google Cloud and AWS credits, and entries to the next level of Tech Stars and partner events.
Global Sustainable Revolution
The theme for this weekend was Global Sustainable Revolution, and the event happened simultaneously across more than 50 cities. In Bangalore, there were 7 teams gunning for the big prize.
Teams were pitching businesses around eco-friendly furniture, food waste management, recycling plastic into apparel, green rewards, reusable food delivery containers, agricultural produce logistics and recycling awareness programs. Participants comprised of students, entrepreneurs and professionals with diverse backgrounds such as design, tech, apparel, logistics, etc.
The winning pitch went to team Re-Pack who tackled the very widespread problem of food delivery containers with a business model around incentivising the reuse of those containers. They get to go to the nation-wide Techstars event, with a chance to travel to Paris for the global event! Wouldn’t we all love to have our next Swiggy order Re-Packed?
Runners up were Green Rewards – a very interesting business concept of rewarding people for taking environmental friendly steps like walking or cycling. Imagine getting a discount on your next order for the steps you take to save the planet. Awesome!
Third place went to Social Recyclers who plan to convert PET bottles into reusable apparel. These bottles mostly end up in landfills today. Watch out for this one – Dheeraj Razdan who pitched the idea is actually setting this business up and will launch soon.
Apart from the top teams, team UpBoard! who were making reusable furniture from wasted packaging material ended up selling some of their work during the event, and got an honourable mention.
